Headquartered in sunny Los Angeles, GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized AI robotics startup serving the manufacturing industry. We empower shop floor workers with our smart robots that assist with tedious and ergonomically challenging tasks, specifically in automated surface finishing. Our proprietary GMR-AI™ software is integrated with state-of-the-art industrial robots, sensors, and tools to create application-specific turnkey solutions for customers through a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model.
We help manufacturers improve the quality of life for their workforce while increasing production capacity, and reducing scrap, repair, and rework costs. As a Robotics Engineer: Paint, you will join our Government Projects team onsite in our Carson, CA office to design, develop, and deploy advanced robotic systems for automated surface finishing and painting applications. In this role, you’ll collaborate directly with customers to understand manufacturing processes, configure GMR-AI for optimal tool paths, and create simulation models for coverage, cycle time, and quality. You’ll work cross-functionally with mechanical, robotics, and product teams to engineer custom robotic cells, integrate control components, run proof-of-concepts, and deliver consistent, high-quality results from concept through deployment.
Responsibilities
Work with the customer to learn about the manufacturing process and requirements, including observing the current process, taking measurements, collecting existing process data, CAD, and machine documentation
Configure GMR-AI to generate tool paths and trajectories for robotic paint operations
Develop OLP/coverage models (e.g., RobotStudio Paint, Tecnomatix), including film-build/thickness simulation and coverage & cycle-time optimization
Work with mechanical and robotics engineers to design and develop the work cell for a specific task, keeping in mind the robot's reachability, coverage on part, and cycle time
Make any necessary design modifications on the robot end-of-arm-tool and part fixtures by working with mechanical engineers, and get parts fabricated, assembled, and tested
Design, implement, and deploy robotic cells, systems, and components
Install, troubleshoot, and maintain control components such as proximity sensors, relays, and vacuum ejectors
Develop process recipes for a consistent outcome
Work with engineering and support firms
Lead rigorous system testing practices
Lead proof of concepts for customers
Create documentation, manuals, and educational contents
Developing new applications using GrayMatter technologies and solutions
Work with the product and engineering teams to improve the customer experience
Participate in business proposal writing
Travel may be required up to 20% of the time
