Hourly rate:  $24

FLSA:  Non-exempt / Non-union represented

This position allows for up to 3-4 days of remote work per week (minimum one day in the LA office)

About the Office of Strategic Communications & Stakeholder Engagement

The Office of Strategic Communications & Stakeholder Engagement (SCSE) works to ensure that all of the agency’s key audiences and stakeholders, including the public, attorney licensees, legal services partners, admission applicants—as well as its oversight bodies—know about the agency’s public protection role and are aware of the State Bar’s services and resources. The office supports the agency’s key strategic objectives and initiatives, provides consumer legal information, and supports all key functions of the agency through online content, social media channels, publications, and media and public outreach. SCSE also manages the State Bar's main public website as a key resource for all stakeholders. 

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal intern will have experience with or a strong interest in web application development, programming languages, and enjoy working with content management systems (CMS) like Drupal, WordPress, and Joomla. In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:

  • Currently enrolled in a 4-year college or university pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree.
  • Interested in public service.
  • Self-starter. 
  • Proven ability to quickly grasp new tools and technology.
  • Enjoy staying up to date with industry trends and technologies (e.g., generative AI)
  • Excellent work ethic. 
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to the State Bar’s values of clarity, excellence, respect, and a growth mindset. 
  • Interested in learning about and working in the public sector. 
  • Ability to work ten weeks full-time from May/June through early August 2025.
  • Must reside in California and be able to go into the Los Angeles or San Francisco office at least once a week.

Definition

Under the general supervision of SCSE management and web team, the intern will perform a variety of assignments based on the needs of the office.  Assignment areas may include meeting with stakeholders to understand their needs, conceptualizing and/or designing user interfaces, developing and/or testing website code, collaborating with members of the web team and developers to maintain the websites, and other tasks as assigned.

Examples of Essential Duties

The Summer 2025 Web Developer Intern will work under the supervision of SCSE management and/or web team on web-related matters which will include the following: 

  • Assist with final stages of a major web redesign implementation: testing, bug fixes, tracking of changes.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings to understand and review business requirements.
  • Assess potential new web features and tools available through exploration, proofs of concept, and other processes, applying newly developed website design libraries and guidelines.
  • Design user interfaces, navigation menus, mockups, and prototypes.
  • Write front-end website code using programming languages like HTML or JavaScript.
  • Run tests to ensure web code quality standards are met.
  • Identify and fix problems with performance or user experience.
  • Work with designers, developers, and stakeholders to create a cohesive and user-friendly site.
  • Review web analytics to ensure performance and requirements (e.g., accessibility, SEO) are met and remediate issues as needed.
  • Support other web-related work as appropriate for the intern’s level of experience.
